"Every church should have a copy" Church in Essex
"Just what the Church needs" London
"Full of sane, practical and Biblical advice…."
These are typical of the comments being made about our latest video resource - A Video Workshop for Depressed Christians, introduced by Pam Rhodes.
The idea for the series of four one hour seminars came from Dr. John Lockley who contacted our Director of Programmes Crawford Telfer over 10 years ago. Dr. Lockley had just written a book, which has since gone on to be a best seller, entitled 'A Practical Workbook for the Depressed Christian'. Ten years on the time seemed right to produce a video version, and so last winter, with the help and support of the Focus Trust, we embarked on the video production.
Just how relevant a subject Christians and depression is was quickly realised when we sent out information to get an audience together for the filming. It became very evident that depression afflicts a surprising number of believers who feel either too ashamed or too guilty to talk about it. Often the church herself has made matters worse by interpreting depression as a failure of faith or the result of sin. In fact as Dr. Lockely makes very clear, depression is a clinical condition which needs understanding, treatment and above all the assurance that God loves and accepts the depressed Christian just as they are.
The series was filmed before a live audience and features short testimonies from those who have experienced depression. Adrian Plass & Peter and Rosemary Meadows are among the contributors. The Biblically and medical based material is presented by Dr. John Lockley whose own experience of depression has given him a deep insight and empathy with others suffering this much misunderstood illness.
If you know anyone who is going through depression, or you are experiencing it yourself, this series is for you. As one doctor commented after watching it - 'every church in the land should have this'.
